ARK OF THE COVENANT
Ark of the Covenant uses virtually the same game system as Carcassonne, quite likely the most popular European-style games since Settlers of Catan (on which Settlers of Zarahemla is based).  The game is set in the time period of the Old Testament, with the Israelites developing the region by building cities, temples, roads and raising sheep.

ARMORY

Set in a fantasy realm, the excitement is unfortunately lacking in this card game from M.E.K. Games.

ATLANTIC STORM - The Bad
The Bad.  Review # 2, this one by Jay Ouzts, offers a different ... and very negative ... view on the game.  Read at your own risk!

ATLANTIC STORM - The Good
The Good.  Oh, no ... not another card game!  Actually, though, this Avalon Hill release  is quite good as players try to sink and/or save Allied convoys from the dangerous Deutsche Kriegsmarine during WWII.

CARCASSONNE: HUNTERS & GATHERERS

Travel back in time to the days prior to the medieval city of Carcassonne, when man was scurrying about in search of berries and wild beasts.

CARTAGENA
The 'Running of the Pirates'!  This fast and easy game is reminiscent of Hare and Tortoise and has proven quite popular.

CASTLE
This Bruno Faiduti release may not be laden with strategy, but it is good fun nonetheless.

CAVE TROLL
Yet another dungeon exploration game, filled with adventurers, dwarves, elves, monsters and treasures.  When, oh, when will this theme go out of vogue?  Apparently, no time soon as designers and companies keep cranking out titles with these mythical settings. Fortunately, this one is a keeper.

CLASH OF THE GLADIATORS
With the right attitude, this game can be fun ... especially if you have a lust for blood, a desire to test your worth in the arena … and it is very late at night!

CLASH OF THE LIGHT SABERS

Wait a minute?  Is this Hasbro releasing a decent strategy game?  You bet!

CLIPPERS
Clippers is the latest evolution of Alan Moon's Sante Fe and, in spite of some problems with the components, is quite good.

CORRUPTION
In this Bruno Faidutti release, players represent shady businessmen, politicians and mobsters, all trying to get a piece of the lucrative construction business.

CORSAIRS

COSMIC ENCOUNTER
This is a gaming classic, originally released by Eon GamesAvalon Hill version has vastly improved the components, but is the game the same or better?

DER WEISSE LOTUS
Even the best things in life can make you sick if you get too much of it.  Sadly, Der Weisse Lotus offers one clever mechanism which is beaten to death.

DIE NEUEN ENTDECKER
Klaus Teuber revamps Entdecker, one of the games originally envisioned as part of the Settlers of Catan trilogy.

DIE SIEBEN WEISEN

Marrying some elements of Taj Mahal and Ohne Furcht und Adel, this Reiner Stockhausen release is quite the fantasy journey.

EYE OF HORUS

FOSSIL
The mechanics are very straight-forward and simple, but the strategy is much more compelling in this fossil collecting game from Rio Grande Games.

FUNDSTÜCKE
Friedemann Friese takes us into the world of junk collecting in this entertaining romp filled with randomness.

GALAXY: DARK AGES
GMT continues its series of re-designs of Reiner Knizia titles.  This time, it's a reworking of the popular Titan: The Arena.

GALLOPING PIGS
Racing games come in a wide variety of themes, including bicycles, hot air balloons, boats and even rickshaws.  And let’s not forget our friends the animals. The gaming world has been blessed with games based on the racing of horses, dogs, rabbits and tortoises, elephants, hedgehogs and even worms.  But pigs?  C’mon … when will this all end?

Gang of Four
Falling into the same family as Tichu, this intriguing card game from the Far East has me hooked!

GERONIMO
U.S. expansion into the great, un-tamed West in this highly detailed Richard Berg design by Avalon Hill.

GLOBAL POWERS

Global Powers is NOT your average German-style game.  It actually bears much more in common with games released by American companies such as Avalon Hill.  The game is filled with negotiations, deal-making, voting and cut-throat actions.  Not exactly the “family friendly” atmosphere that most European games attempt to capture.  Indeed, even the opening sentence in the game’s description warns of its nature:  “A politically incorrect game including tactics, agitation …“

GLOBOPOLIS

Globopolis provides us with a look into the world of the future.  Sadly, the gaming world still revolves around Monopoly.

GOUDA GOUDA

Mice in your attic!  Ravenous creatures race across the attic in pursuit of cheese in this entertaining game aimed squarely at children.

HARE AND TORTOISE
Known in Deutschland as Hase und Igel, this 'classic' has been through several editions and is still going strong.

HELL RAIL

The theme is rather bizarre: You and your opponents are engineers in Hades delivering

souls of the damned to their proper Circles of Hell.  As engineers, you have a wide variety of tasks assigned to you, including the building of the actual rail lines, the loading of these damned souls and the successful delivery of your cargo to the proper circles of Hell.  Players must be efficient, lest they incur the wrath of their infernal boss, who is notorious for his lack of mercy!

HIGH SOCIETY
Not just another bidding game ... and it has nothing to do with Mel Brooks.  Instead, it is another winner from the popular German game designer Reiner Knizia

INTRIGE
Nasty, nasty and even more nasty.  That's the thrust of Intrige, the back-stabbing, deceitful delight from Stefan Dorra.

JAVA
The latest in the Tikal / Torres series from the design team of Kramer & Kiesling.  This time, players explore the enchanting island of Java.

KEYDOM
Richard Breese's limited edition game has some intriguing mechanisms yet worrisome flaws.

KRIEG UND FRIEDEN
Gerhard Muller's first foray into the field of game design is original, pretty and intriguing ... yet somehow it doesn't hit the mark.

From gardens to cities.  Gerd Fenchel, designer of Kraut & Ruben, now tackles the task of building cities in this challenging game released by Kosmos and Rio Grande Games.

LIBERTE
Off with their heads!  Designer Martin Wallace has created a tense, challenging and entertaining game set during the French Revolution.

Logistico is a mentally challenging game, requiring careful planning, good decisions and optimal coordination and execution.  It is another winner from the gaming Dutchman.

LORDS OF THE SIERRA MADRE
Decision Game's intriguing, yet extremely confusing game set in turn-of-the-century Mexico.

LOST VALLEY

Explore the western wilderness in search of fabulous riches ... gold, that is!  This exploration game from Roland and Tobias Goslar has some drawbacks, but is still an entertaining romp.

LUCKY LOOP
Are you daring enough to compete in the four air shows, performing all sorts of aerial stunts?  Let the dice rolling begin!

M
Originally designed as a 'convention' game, this one was so good it was released in full form by Abacus Spiele.

MANHATTAN
Skyscrapers and monsters in the 'Big Apple'.  This Spiel des Jahre winner is engaging and nasty.

MARE NOSTRUM

Is this really a 2-hour version of Civilization?  Sadly, no ... but the game is worth playing anyway.

MEDINA
Just another tile placement game?  Not on your life!  This challenging game from Steffan Dorra uses big, honkin' chunks of wood which make quite a spectacle as the city is re-built.

MEMOIR '44
Days of Wonder has provided a wonderful production of Memoir ’44, adapting the simple yet fun-filled game system pioneered in Battle Cry to World War II, with emphasis on the Allied invasion of Normandy.

MERCHANTS OF AMSTERDAM
Ever been to a Dutch auction?  Well, now is your chance in this entertaining and challenging release from Reiner Knizia.

MERIDIAN
Meridian, seems to have as much, if not more strategic elements than Leo Colonvini's more heralded design Carolus Magnus.  Surprisingly, however, there hasn't been much press about this one and I'm not quite sure why.  My best guess is that it is fairly abstract and, indeed, some would consider it 'dry'.

MERMAID RAIN

Sure, the theme may be off-putting to some, but do yourself a favor and get past it.  The game underneath the “cutesy” theme is quite good.

MEXICA
In Mexica, Kramer & Kiesling take us many centuries back into the past when the  Mayan tribes were just beginning to develop their legendary city of Tenochitlan, which is now present-day Mexico City.  This is another winner from the supermen of game design.

MODERN ART
Players participate in a series of auctions, acquiring works from five up-and-coming artists.  Which one will become the next Picasso, the next Rembrandt?

MYSTERY OF THE ABBEY

Brother Adelmo is dead and foul play is suspected.  You are charged with the task of discovering which of the resident monks in this formerly quiet and peaceful abbey is responsible for this evil deed.

NEW ENGLAND

Every so often a game is released that contains a mechanism that is so unique that it elicits a collective “Wow!” from most folks in the gaming community.  I’m always a bit skeptical to authoritatively declare such mechanisms as original creations since they might have been utilized in some obscure game released in the past of which I am completely unaware.  Be that as it may, I do feel that designers Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum have invented such an original and thoroughly brilliant mechanism in their new release, New England.

NICHT DIE BOHNE
Yet another bean-themed game from Deutschland, but his one has real spunk!

NUR PEANUTS
This push-your-luck game of dice rolling and property seleciton may be light, but it can be loads of fun.

Or is it Citadelles?  No matter the name, this is a clever and enjoyable game from designer Bruno Faidutti.

OLYMPIA 2000
Go for the Gold in this cute, harmless little card game from Steffan Dorra.

OSTINDISKA KOMPANIET
Sailing the high seas in search of riches and profits in this 1992 Swedish Game of the Year by Dan Glimme.

PHOENIX
Part of the 2-player Euro Games line, the idea here is to get your colors in the correct order.  The game is OK ... it just lacks "punch".

PIG PILE
Richard Borg delves into the world of pigs with this light, yet entertaining card game based on an old Finnish game.

Pirate King
Object of the game: Accumulate 16 victory points by upgrading your ships and territory.  Or beat the commodore in battle.

Pirate Kings in a very large box.  The box is needed to hold all the bits included in the game.

Head to the seas in search of treasure and booty in this fun romp dripping with pirate atmosphere.

POLITIKA
Tom Clancy's venture into the realm of wargaming proves wanting.

POMPEJI

Travel back to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, building the town before the eventual eruption of Mt. Vesuvius puts an end to this highly challening and entertaining game.

PRINCES OF FLORENCE

PRINCESS RYAN'S STAR MARINES

The two Brunos (Faidutti and Cathalla) have teamed-up to present this fun game of intrigue and greed in the courts of the French king.

Can you promote your candidates to the Roman Senate and collect the most laurels along the way?  Negotiation and deal-making are essential in this Reiner Knizia creation from Mayfair.

RANSOM
Negotiation and deal-making are essential in this building construction gem from Phil O'Neill.

RELATIONSHIP TIGHTROPE / DRAHTSEILAKT
This once obscure Reiner Knizia card game has found a new lease on life with its re-release as Relationship Tightrope

RHEINLANDER
Yet another in the series of tile laying games from Reiner Knizia.  Although somewhat enjoyable, however, this one doesn't measure up to its predecessors.

ROBIN HOOD
Robin's merry men struggle to steal the most loot in this entertaining and challenging card game from Klaus Palesch.

ROMMEL IN THE DESERT
Columbia's game of WWII North African warfare using their ingenious block system.

SAGA

Set in a fantasy world (like a thousand other games!), Saga relives the struggle for power to control a kingdom in turmoil.  Kindoms change hands quickly, so proper planning and timing is required.

SAN FRANCISCO
It's Alive!  My good friend Mark Jackson calls this the 'Frankenstein' of games.  He's not far off, as the game is a combination of mechanisms from numerous other titles.

SAN GIMIGNANO

A game centered on the enchanting Italian hill town of San Gimignano was certainly a "must buy" for me.  But was the purchase worth it?

SAVANNAH CAFE
Thirsty animals out on the Savannah rush to be the first to reach to the cafe.  Memory, card-counting and calculated risks are all present in this Euro Games release.

SCARAB LORDS
Yet another Reiner Knizia 2-player game, this one set once again in ancient Egypt and filled with cards bearing beautiful artwork.

SCREAM MACHINE
Headed to a theme park?  Well, this game is bulging with options, loaded with tough choices, dripping with theme and bursting with fun.  Looks like I’ll be making repeated visits to this theme park for more rides on the Scream Machine.

SERENISSIMA
Trading, diplomacy and conflict during the Renaissance in this fascinating game from Euro Games.

SETTLERS OF ZARAHEMLA

Based on the immensely popular Settlers of Catan, Inspiration Games' Settlers of Zarahemla integrates a theme based on the Mormon religion.

SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION
Although the computer game is a classic, this boardgame adaptation leaves much to be desired.

SILBERZWERG
Hi-ho, Hi-ho, it's off to work we go!  No, this isn't a remake of the classic Disney film Snow White.  Rather, it is a challenging game of mining caves for gems and meeting contracts.

SPANK THE MONKEY
In spite of an incredibly poor choice of names, there is quite a bit of wholesome fun packed into this game of ousting a michevious monkey.

SPLIT
Yet another surprisingly entertaining and challenging release from Hasbro.  Players match wits ... and card halves ... in this David Hoyt design.

STADENS NYCKEL
Dan Glimne's follow up to Svea Rike is flawed, but some modifications have made it an enjoyable game.

STAR WARS: EPIC DUELS

STRUGGLE OF EMPIRES
Struggle of Empires is a thing of beauty, a true gamer’s game.  The game is overflowing with tough choices, rich flavor, and numerous strategic options.

SUCCESSORS
Alexander the Great is dead and his generals are struggling to assume control of his empire.  This Avalon Hill release uses elements from the popular We the People and Hannibal series.

SVEA RIKE
Had enough of the German game invasion?  Try this Swedish Game of the Year which recreates over 300 years of Swedish history.

TAHUANTINSUYU
Set in the Incan empire, players are charged with the task of expanding the kingdom, conquering neighboring tribes and establishing cities, temples and terraces.  The game combines elements of crayon rail games with empire building and construction.  The end result is a truly fantastic game.

TAJ MAHAL
Herr Knizia takes us on a visit to the enchanted land of India in this intriguing game which blends a variety of mechanisms.

TERRA

THE ANTONI GAUDI TILE GAME
A game based on a turn-of-the-century tile design by a Spanish architect?  Yes ... and it is a surprisingly entertaining and challenging one at that!

THEOPHRASTUS
Having an absolutely abysmal knowledge of most scientific fields, the name “Theophrastus” meant absolutely nothing to me.  So, when I heard that Mayfair was going to be releasing a game under this name, I thought it might be some sort of Philosophy-based trivia game.  I eventually learned that the game’s theme is derived from the middle-ages alchemist Theophrastus von Bombast der Hohenheim.

TICKET TO RIDE

Ticket to Ride seems destined to be another Moon gem.  It seems to be an eclectic marriage of systems merged from Santa Fe, Union Pacific and TransAmerica.  Unlike most celebrity marriages, however, this one works … and will likely have considerable longevity.

TIME PIRATES
Hop back and forth in time in search of precious artifacts in this time travel game by Alan Moon and Aaron Weissblum.

TIN SOLDIERS
"When Good Food Goes Bad".  This clever card game from Al Newman goes way beyond the norm in regards to trick-taking games.  The additional features and twists make for an exciting, tense game with lots of decisions to be made.

TOM TUBE
Set in a deep-space station, players rush to construct tubes, race through them and gather energy cubes.  Lots of thinking and tactics are packed into this wonderful 2-player game.

TOO MANY COOKS
No, this isn’t Andy Merritt’s homemade design from last year.  Rather, it is the latest new card game from Reiner Knizia, released by R&R Games, and it is quite the entertaining romp.

Size does matter in this quirky little game about managing and building a thriving indian tribe.

TYCOON
Game of flight connections, money management and hotel and factory construction by Wolfgang Kramer, the designer of El Grande.

TYRUS
While pleasant enough, the central mechanism of "blind placement" is just too much for me.

URSUPPE
The never-ending struggle for survival in the primordial soup is recreated in this lively and entertaining release from Doris & Frank.

VENEZIA
If you've ever been to Venice, you will know it is inundated by pigeons.  What a great theme for a game!

VICTORY & HONOR

For folks who enjoy trick-taking games, Victory & Honor is simply superb.  It is quite likely the pinnacle of the genre.

VIKINGATID
Raid, pillage and plunder in this wonderful, albeit lengthy, game from Sweden.

VOX POPULI
Vox Populi … the Voice of the People!  The fate of gladiators in ancient Rome could often depend upon the whims of the people.  Tilset's game based on this ancient voting practice fails to live up to the drama of the history it attempts to recreate.

WALLENSTEIN
A German game with a heavy "war" theme?  Yes, and the end result is quite satisfying, producing a game wrought with tension and requiring careful thought, planning and decisions.

ZOMBIES
If you're a fan of the 'Dawn of the Dead' movie series, then you ought to enjoy the spirit of this shoot 'em, light game.  Sadly, the game itself leaves much to be desired.
